Typeface — Midland

$10.00 CAD

Midland is an typeface based on the engravings on film cameras. Specifically Leica’s. The name Midland is in reference to a factory in a city of the same name in Ontario, Canada. It was responsible for manufacturing & even designing a number of superb lenses for Leitz Camera based in Wetzlar.

I did a fairly exact copy of Leica’s engraving back in 2018 called Full Stop, but decided recently to refine it and add some more glyphs (like №, ‡, ©, and ™) and a proper gamut of accented characters (like Ñ, Ç, and Œ.) In the process I ended up making a lot of changes.

The ‘b’, ‘g’, and ‘s’ as well as the numbers ‘2’, ‘3’, ‘5’, and ‘8’ got pot bellies. The cross-bar on all figures was shifted down to a lower axis (ie. abefghpqrsy23456789).

I also did a set of ligatures which should probably never be used unless you truly hate your readers (ie. fjffjfffiflffiffl).

So now it’s a whole different beast. It comes in three weights, and -- unlike many other Leica derived products -- you can have the whole works for $10 CAD.
