Flightless Birds - 2014
Looking back this is still one of my favourite batch of images. I was playing with the idea that, if a bird is primarily known as a flying thing, than a flightless bird (or a non-flying flying thing) could really be anything.
I also wanted the bring in a study of the Kuleshov Effect, the idea that the order in which images are shown plays a crucial role in the understanding of the narrative. The images on the right seem to be close up shots of the same object in the air, and they are understood that way, when in fact they are just being held only a couple feet off the ground. This also feeds back into my original idea as each image creates the illusion and then the incorrect assumption that these objects -- which are clearly quite heavy and can't float -- are doing precisely that.
